THE RIVALS

by Richard Brinsley Sheridan

The Rivals was particularly challenging because there is no class that complements the acting challenges that Restoration theatre addresses. It was therefore the responsiblity of the director to teach the style as well as direct the scene. For this scene I chose the metaphorical image of a portrait. More important than the picture itself, I wanted the brush strokes to inform the movement of the actors. This allowed for a variety of floor patterns for the actors, ranging from slow and calculating movements to large sweeping ones.
